Good morning, and thank you for joining me for the scoop with Tanya Flanagan, I'm so happy you decided to wake up and start your day with me here on the scoop, where we talk about life, joy, funny moments, trending topics and so much more. We promise to keep you in the know and find out what you know. So let's get started.

Unknown Speaker 0:42
You Good morning Las Vegas, and thank you for joining me once again here on 91.5k U, N, V, jazz and more. It's great to be here for another Sunday morning. It is amazing how quickly time flies, and then we are getting ready to gear up for another school year. So I know people out there are getting ready and resources are needed, so that's going to be a little bit of the focus of today's show, just to make sure you're aware of some things going on in the community and just wise to resources that you might need and how to access those programs. So with that, I am delighted to welcome to the show my friend and my colleague, Gina Alexander, with Clark County. Hi, Gina,

Unknown Speaker 1:29
Hi. How you doing today?

Unknown Speaker 1:31
I am doing well, and I know you wear a lot of hats. Today. We're talking about a community resource fair that's coming up at abundant heart Community Church on Friday. So just to give people, sort of a sneak preview of what they can expect, what the church is intending to accomplish, and why they are getting into which all churches are in the business of helping people, but how they're going about doing this resource fair, which is Friday, August 16. So what's your role in that, and how to end up? You know, you do a lot of stuff in the community, and I've known you to do so much youth outreach with camp brotherhood, Camp sisterhood. You've come out here to UNLV campus. As a matter of fact, we've done communications workshops for kids together, and supported the county summer Business Institute program for those who may or may not be familiar with the job training program, where the county employs about 100 kids, and they go to work four days a week, and then life skills classes on Fridays, and then they do a civic engagement project for the community, and I know you've worked on that over the years, but now you are also working in the faith based space. So kind of you know what's going on with this hat that you're wearing for this?

Unknown Speaker 2:53
Well, the one thing I find out is the hats that you wear professionally, sometimes they roll over into your personal life. And so this hat that I have, that I am proud to wear is I am part of the community resource ministry for abundant heart Community Church, and I am proud to be on that that ministry to assist the congregation and connecting them to any resources that they may need. We do find that our families in the church normally go to their pastor to get assistance, and sometimes the pastor does not have all the information on how to connect the congregation to different resources. So what we've done is we've selected myself as a person since that is a professional hat that I wear, and I can do that just kind of right off the top of my head, to be part of that ministry. So what this is, what our first, our first outreach event that we wanted to bring to the entire community, not just for the church, but for the entire community to come out and sit down with pointers, which is, point is it is a pop up community resource, wraparound services that go around to various different sites and provide these services so pointless. Will be there at abundant Heart Church on August 16, from five to 7pm and the and I will be sharing the address here soon. But I just really wanted to talk a little bit more about what to expect. What to expect. Well, one of the things we have found out is you can call 211 and you can ask 211 for any information on how to get connected to resources. But you got to know what you need. You got to know what you are looking for. And sometimes people know that they need. Something they just don't know how to get connected. And then, as they if they were sitting down with someone that could wrap them with services, they can literally help them connect to all the different services that may help the entire family. So even though we can call the 211, this event will allow you to sit down with a case manager, and they can sit down and really talk to you about what you need. Housing resources, medical resources, mental health resources, food resources, all different types of things to make your family self sufficient and to address any barriers that you are facing, and you'll be able to talk with someone that can follow you through the process. On that day, there's going to be food and drinks and an opportunity to sit down with pointers and get this information. You will also be able to obtain additional information if you don't have a church home. Guess what? It's a great time to really visit abundant heart to find out if you might need a church home. So you can come out and really talk to us about having a place to worship. There. I will be there to answer any questions as well. We have other individuals that are in our church that will be will be there with various different services. So it is really a great event that's open to the entire community. And it's not going to be outside. That's the greatest part. We're going to be inside. You're not going to be in 100 degrees, so we will be out there, there to help anyone with any barriers that they are facing.

Unknown Speaker 6:54
It sounds really impactful and really complete and like a really great benefit for the community to come out and take advantage of it. I was looking at pointers and noticing that they really are an all inclusive, comprehensive operation that essentially provides wrap around services, and you talked about the areas that they deal with. I was not familiar with them before learning about this resource fair coming up on the weekend, at the end of the week, I should say. And so that was part of why I wanted to bring you on just to talk a little bit. I would have been nice to get some of them to come in too, but I know you had done the research, and you were passionate about bringing them to the church, and so I knew you were super familiar with who they are and what they do. And then I thought we could also just talk about some other stuff that's going on in the community that might be of interest to people. But I thought it was really neat that this organization has been around for a while, providing comprehensive services, and that they're, they kind of go out to people, so they have a mobile operation, if you will, as well. So they go to where they believe clients and people who need the types of services that they preside provide are, and they meet them where they are to provide those services. And I was noticing that it is health equity issues that they address and housing challenges. They set up a covid 19 support center within their operation. And covid is, you know, we're seeing some, some cases of it again here and there. We may always see those cases, but they really bring you everything that you need, if your home and your sheltering in place to prevent from further spreading covid to anyone. And you need household supplies or you need food supplies, they actually identify your need, and then they bring you the supplies that you need to allow you to rest and really heal and have a more speedy recovery when you're in a covid situation, they assist people with doing applications when you need housing support you are looking for funding or looking for housing locations, they help with as a conduit to work with other organizations in the valley so they're aware of other resources, and they exponentially provide services that individuals and families may need in order to be more self sufficient. So it was really kind of a neat operation that I observed they provide in the community. So that's kind of neat that they're going to be coming.

Unknown Speaker 9:39
Yes, and they are definitely, it's really a unique way of providing services, because you do, they do not actually have an office that you just go and sit at. They just come to you. So that's just, what about having a great house call for community resources? And that's what I. Say they are the House Call of community resources. But I wanted to add because I know earlier I said I would provide the address, but I really want you guys to know that. But it is the abundant heart Community Church, and it is located 2535 West Cheyenne avenue, suite 100 North Las Vegas, Nevada, 89 032, and I will repeat that before we we close out our call to today here. Well, while I'm here in the studio, I would want to repeat that again, but I just wanted to let you guys know that to write that down while you can to know where it is and it is open to the entire community. I don't want you to think it's just open to a small amount of people, but anyone that you know of, anyone that has called you and said, Hey, do you know how to get utility assistance? Do you know how to get rental assistance? Can you tell me where I can get free dental for my children? Can you tell me how I can get some dental assistance? This is the day to come out and get that information. They will be the ones to know to walk you through the entire process. We know a lot of people have been faced with evictions, and they really don't know how the process of going through the evictions, they can definitely point you in the right direction on how to address your barrier with eviction. Absolutely,

Unknown Speaker 11:34
I was looking at that. They assist people with I know many people are familiar with the chat program that was put in place during the space of covid to respond to housing the housing crisis that was part of the housing crisis that erupted and pointless, is very well versed in completing those applications and pointing you in the directions that you need to go in terms of housing assistance, and I would assume transportation assistance, education resources for your children. We are getting We are like a day before school will resume here in Southern Nevada and Clark County. So a lot of things that people need, and once you the school year has gotten underway, they will be right there in case there are any voids or holes that you need to feel. So it's actually really great timing that abundant heart Community Church is offering this community resource fair a few days after families get back to back into the school year, and, you know, begin to identify some things that they may not have thought about, that you need help with. And this is just a great place to come. She gave you the address. Gina gave you the address. Major cross streets are basically Simmons and Cheyenne so on. Cheyenne just east of Simmons, yeah, just a little bit east of Simmons, so and it's five o'clock PM. It's going to start on Friday, August 16. So this should be and you food and resources and all kinds of stuff. So you really can't beat a resource fair that also might have dinner, or at least appetizers involved, some way to start your Friday and just get to meet some really nice people who will be there for the for the distance and the long haul also happening later today this morning. So thank you, Gina, for getting up so early this morning, but I know they are having a back to school event today. At is it Parkdale? Help me remember? I

Unknown Speaker 13:37
think it's parked. Yes. Is that Parkdale community Senior Center, and that that address is 3200 Ferndale Street, Las Vegas, Nevada, 89121, and that will be happening this morning, at 11am to 2pm The great part about this is you can bring your children out, and they are offering free haircuts. They're offering free manicures and pedicures. And there's going to be a beautician on site that can help do some very simple hairdos for the girls. They are going to have all kinds of giveaways, resources and things that that's going to help your children get back on on track for school, backpacks, household items. It this is definitely event that you will not want to miss, and I am so proud of all of our barbers and beauticians that has just took the time to give back to literally, because this is literally their day off, and they want to give back, and they are not asking for anything. They're just asking to come out and appreciate them giving back to the community. So I'm very excited. And I know that, Tanya, you're very familiar with the young man, one of the one of the barbers that is going to be helping our children in foster care.

Unknown Speaker 15:11
Yes, I am excited about that. Yeah, Give me. Give us some props. Give us some props to, yeah, we give him some. Give us some props to Barbara's arc, who I've had on the show, on the show in the past, just talking about their mission. Young men who came from trouble challenge backgrounds found themselves going through, you know, some situations with the law, but getting on the other side of it, and finding that pathway to self rehabilitate, and then just to become a benefit and an asset to the community. And they did that through going to barber school. And then they began to develop this idea of what they felt like, I guess, as kids, as we've talked about it before on the show, not having had a haircut, wanting to have that, wanting to have one less thing that made you stand out and allow you to to fit in and feel good about yourself. And so they got into this place of creating what they call barbers. Are barbers acts of random kindness, and the the hook is that they randomly provide their barber services free of cost and allow children, primarily children in foster care is one of the focus areas for them to come and receive a haircut at no cost to the agency or to the foster family or to anyone, just to allow that kid a simple haircut and a chance to just have something that lets him feel good about himself. And so they are. Osiris lunch is one of the CO, one of the founders, or co founders, of barbers arc, along with Tommy free is and Osiris told I talked to him before today, and he said to me he had about 15 barbers who were lined up to participate today. So that is a huge number, a really good number of barbers planning to come out this morning to provide services from 11am to 2pm over at Parkdale Community Resource Center over on Ferndale, just to get back to the community. And it's just one of the things that are going to be going on and and I'll tell you, folks, I was over at Parkdale a couple of months ago for and Gina knows she was you were there too for the food and groove,

Unknown Speaker 17:22
food and groove, food

Unknown Speaker 17:23
and groove. And I tell you, I'm going to be the first to testify, it is mad, crazy exciting energy to see how well organized this Community Give Back is structured. There's food, there's music, it's just fun. There's good energy, there's good people, and there's just this sincere mission. Our good friend Alex Bernal is one of the brainchilds behind this project. And I don't know who else deserves credit, but people that I've known for years come out, and they just volunteer time as well. It's part of a Clark County Parks and Recreation. You can chime in because, you know, I've been more people.

Unknown Speaker 18:02
Yeah, we but we definitely have to put the shout out to Commissioner dick fierbone. That's his district, and he and Alex started this together, so we want to give him shout out as well. We also want to let everybody know that this is not a one time theme. It's it comes about every fourth Thursday of the month. And you out there, you get out there at 8am and you have your little basket or whatever. And it is, this is not just something.

Unknown Speaker 18:32
And I'm telling you, people are lined up. And you're right. It's every fourth Thursday of the month. Oh, food and groove happens at nine o'clock in the morning. Is it 9am but it kicks off? Gina,

Unknown Speaker 18:43
yeah, I believe it's 9am or no, you know what I believe right now, as it's hot, it's 8am and it kicks off. But the great part of it is it. It is food and group. It's not just a couple, you know, from some bananas and apples. Eat some real you might even get some meat. You might get a you know, they had, last time that they were there, they had sausage, ground meat, they had watermelon. So you get all types of array of food. So, because we all know, I went to the grocery store and I got five apples, some oatmeal, and two tangerines, and it round up, $17 $17 that can you imagine a person who is having some difficulties financially, and they are going to the grocery store and all you got was five apples and two chance range and some oatmeal, $17 and you don't even have any meat, no rice or no potatoes. That's that's heartbreaking, and I was and I had to keep looking so food and groove when it

Unknown Speaker 19:58
comes. Have, right? They will have all this stuff that you need. Because what we're saying is, we know times are hard. It's really challenging. There's so much going on in the community right now, people trying to band together and bring together resources to give, to supplement what people need and what's missing. But food and groove is one of those spaces every fourth Thursday. Right now it's hot outside, so starting at 8am there's food, and I have to attest, as Gina has really good food, antioxidants, fresh fruit and produce and just a variety of things that are helpful, especially when you're trying to stretch her down and you're trying to feed your family, and things are just difficult or coming up short or and this isn't for just a family that's needy, because we're all a little bit, you know, going through different things at different times, regardless of even if you maybe are gainfully employed. Just different things happen. One month could be a difficult month, and you can need a little bit of help. So it's a space to get some help. The Back to School event is going on today at the same location in Parkdale. I know there's also, I'm headed to, I'm going to run by Parkdale in a little bit. But also the the brunch is happening to support the just what's going on in this whole election cycle. So there's also a brunch going on today. There's just so much going on the it's Nevada, when black women for Harris are having a brunch today as well. So there's just so much going on in our community so but I just we just want you to know what's happening. What resources are available, events coming up to get our kids ready to be successful in school, because it's also important with the food and groove. Because when I was growing up, my dad was always adamant that we weren't hungry, and it was really important to be able to provide a breakfast meal to make sure your kids get up and their brains get, you know, get moving and everything is functioning, and you can study much better when you're not thinking about how hungry you are. So this is one of those ways that we work to eliminate that hunger and give kids a better chance. And you mentioned Clark County Commissioner tick Sager bloom that this is his brain child, the centers in his area, district E of the Clark County area. So just want to say thank you to him for having part of the vision to figure out how to kind of provide a community pantry, if you will, to supply the needs of residents in the area and just around that area. Gina, am I missing anything that's come up? I know we talked about Parkdale, we talked about today, we will continue to remind you about the resource fair on Friday, and the address and what's coming up there and what you can expect to experience. And just you also mentioned the opportunity, if someone's looking for a place to worship or just some, some support. You know, support,

Unknown Speaker 23:02
I guess I wonder. We've hit a lot of things, a lot, you know, a lot of things is going on. I'm just just wanting them to know that even if they missed the plaintiffs event for August 16, which I'm hoping that everyone tries to come out on August 16 from five to 7pm at the abundant heart Community Church. That you can go on the plaintiff's website and look at their calendar, and then they let you know about the other places that they're going to be. If it's not in your area that we're going to be on August 16, feel free to look at plaintiff's website and find out where they're going to be in other areas, because you may have to go to their pop up in another area. But we're hoping to see you on August 16, from five to 7pm at abundant heart community, church. Just

Unknown Speaker 23:56
to make easy, you wouldn't happen to have handy with you, because I looked at it, but there the website information for pointers so that we can provide that too.

Unknown Speaker 24:08
Yeah, I think I can pull that up

Unknown Speaker 24:12
make sure that we share that with people as well. And I know Gina, you're just a wealth of information, and I know you're often connecting the dots for folks and working on a variety of different programs, and I like to make sure, if people want to, they've shared social handles and information with the listening audience, so that if there's ever anything that has tickled someone's ear and you want to reach out to that person, you have the opportunity to find them and ask more questions. So as their social media stuff you want people to have so they can find you, or just a way to reach out to you if necessary

Unknown Speaker 24:47
or not, to put you yes and I

Unknown Speaker 24:50
put you on the spot.

Unknown Speaker 24:53
Well, you did you put me on the spot because I was so busy trying to make sure that they have pointers. Website. So let's start off with that plaintiff's website is plaintiffs Las vegas.org that again, that's plaintiffs, P, U, e n, t, e s, Las vegas.org

Unknown Speaker 25:18
Okay, and if I want to be a person who finds Jean and Alexander fascinating, which you are, but really you're just a wealth of information. And she is, you're so humble. But the truth of the matter is, you've been there for ever, and you know so much about the city, and you are just full of knowledge about resources and programs and always pulling things together. So you're a really cool person to follow on social media to stay abreast of what's going on and what's available to young people and families and children, especially when we're talking about programs and activities and special things that are coming up. Gina is a great resource for finding out what's happening and what you can tap into. And also, I just want to say Clark County Parks and Recreation is also a great resource for just looking at what's coming up in terms of back to school fairs. There's a number of different programs and opportunities that are happening right now at the various community centers all around the valley. So absolutely, possibly close to you, there's going to be a back to school event, or some type of school supplemental program that's being offered that will give you some access to resources that you might be looking for. You weren't quite sure where to get those. So Clark County Parks and Recreation is always going to be a great resource any of your municipality parks and recreations, be it the county, the cities, Henderson, North Las Vegas, wherever you might live, all of these agencies, I know there's just always going to be so much going on, and everybody will be giving you all that they can give you. So just keep your, you know, eyes peeled to that. And, you know, keep your ears listening to different announcements for different programs that are coming up. But we just want to wanted to dedicate today to making sure, as the school year kicks off, we touch on resources that are available and remind you that today, if you haven't figured it all out, Parkdale is available to you starting at 11am this morning, going until two o'clock this afternoon. And if you're not able to get to Parkdale on Friday. It'll follow up with pointers and the event that's taking place over at abundant heart Community Church and Gina. Go ahead and give the address again for the church,

Unknown Speaker 27:32
2535 West Cheyenne Avenue, that is North Las Vegas, Nevada, and that will be empty. The zip code is 89084, but let me make sure that I 89032, is 890, okay, 9032.

Unknown Speaker 27:54
Is there a phone number that they're advertising in case anyone has questions, or are they just, you know, free to just walk in. And our best advice is to just, they'll definitely be there till seven. So five to seven on Friday, August 16, drop into 2535 West Cheyenne avenue, suite, 100 abundant heart community, church, and just tap into this. These resources.

Unknown Speaker 28:17
And there is a phone number I'm going to share, 702907 702-907-4439 again, 702-907-4439

Unknown Speaker 28:30
alrighty. Well, I thank you for taking some time this morning just to to have this conversation, to share information with our families in the community as we get our kids and families ready to get back into a school year, and I want to encourage everyone to be safe, to be smart, to be kind and to be careful. We are at the end of the show, and as always, Jean, it's a pleasure to spend some time with you. So thank you for getting up this morning and having this conversation about very necessary and needy information.

Unknown Speaker 29:00
Thank you for having me, and I'm I'm so happy that I was here to be able to share this information, because I'm very excited to be able to support anyone in the community. Well,
